The ICF was published in 2001 by the World Health Organization. A German version is maintained by the German Institute of Medical Documentation and Information DIMDI.
"ICF is the WHO framework for measuring health and disability at both individual and population levels." (WHO)
The ICF serves as a multidisciplinary, cross-national, uniform and standardized language.
The ICF classifies the consequences of illness in relation to body functions/body structures, activities and participation, taking into account contextual factors of the individual.
The classification is based on a bio-psycho-social school of thought.
